PHP coloring stops when file.php contains XHTML doctype and <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

PHP coloring stops when file.php contains XHTML doctype and .
see attached screenshot for comparison.
what's weird is if i break the doctype, the color comes
right.
if i remove it completely, it breaks again.
only valid markup that works in browser and espresso-php is if both the doctype and the tag are gone.
